Writing Desk
Where I write, develop and publish.
The Writing Desk is the writing side of Paragraphs. It brings together my fiction, personal writing, essays, satire and other pieces I want to develop or publish.
Some sites have a narrow purpose. Others give me space to try different forms. Keeping them together helps me see what belongs where without forcing everything onto one website.
Fiction at different lengths
Minute Tales is for stories of 300 words or fewer. Sentences is for flash fiction and short stories. Narratives is for longer fiction, including novels, novellas, extracts and projects still being developed.
Each site deals with a different length of fiction. A small idea can stay small. A longer project has somewhere else to go.
Writing built around a voice
Monologues is for pieces carried by one speaker. A Letter is for work built around letters, unreliable accounts and people trying to explain themselves.
The starting point is not always a plot. Sometimes it is a complaint, an apology, a formal note or an account that does not quite add up.
Personal writing
David’s Day covers everyday life, ideas, projects and things I have noticed. It gives me somewhere to write without every post needing to fit a narrow subject.
Being Grandpa is more specific. It is for writing about grandparenthood, family and the parts of that experience I want to record.
Satire and shorter thoughts
Bleh, I Said and iFart sit on the comic and satirical side of the Writing Desk.
Bleh is for reviews, opinions and things that deserve a rating. I Said is for short, candid thoughts about work, ageing, confidence, desire and modern life. iFart is for comic work that needs its own space.
They are not meant to sound the same. Each gives a different kind of idea somewhere suitable to go.
Work in progress
The Writing Desk is not a collection of finished work. Some pieces are published, some are being revised and some are still only ideas.
It gives me one place to organise the writing and keep track of what I am working on.
